Famed conductor Christoph von Dohnányi, who led the Cleveland Orchestra from 1984 to 2002, died this past weekend in Munich, Germany. He was 95.

In 2011, Dohnányi said of the orchestra: “The real, very special (characteristic) about the Cleveland Orchestra is that people, musicians, are used to listening to each other very much.”

Born in Berlin in 1929, Dohnányi came from a family active in the German resistance. His father was executed by the Nazi regime in 1945.

After World War II, he studied composition, piano, and conducting at the Munich Conservatory and worked as a stage extra and house pianist at the Munich Opera.
