Article Icon 1Big Tech Defends Ohio Data Centers

Ohio lawmakers last week grilled representatives from Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft at a state data center hearing, as mounting public concern over tax breaks, environmental impact, and strain on the power grid prompted scrutiny of the industry’s rapid expansion.

The companies contended that data centers generate jobs, safeguard water supplies, and bear their own electricity costs. Legislators, however, remained skeptical of whether the industry’s surging power demand could be absorbed without driving up residential utility bills.

Microsoft announced it would discontinue the use of nondisclosure agreements and stop seeking property tax abatements—commitments the three other companies declined to match.

Gov. Mike DeWine has paused new tax exemptions pending a legislative review of the projects’ economic impact—a step Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker subsequently followed.

Article Icon 1Kroger Makes Best Grocers List

Cincinnati-based Kroger landed at No. 9 on Supermarket News‘ inaugural Super50 Supermarkets list, slotting below Whole Foods Market, but above Walmart.

The publication said the rankings weigh customer satisfaction, workplace reputation, technology adoption, loyalty-program benefits, and additional criteria. Trader Joe’s topped the list, followed by Publix, H-E-B, Costco, Amazon Fresh, Sam’s Club, Aldi, Whole Foods Market, Kroger, and Walmart.

Supermarket News cited customer research compiled by Dunnhumby indicating that Kroger shoppers prize personalized deals, fuel discounts, an intuitive app, the quality of private-label products, and a wide enough selection to support one-stop shopping.

The recognition comes as Kroger enters a new era under recently appointed CEO Greg Foran.

Article Icon 1Historic Ohio Property for Sale

An Ashland landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places has come to market at $999,000 following a seven-year renovation of the 1845 Vermillion Institute—a project that also drew attention from the popular social media account Zillow Gone Wild.

The brick structure was once the largest building in the county and housed a college that predated the College of Wooster. It later served as the local high school before falling vacant for years, until a careful rehabilitation returned it to use.

The 7,000-square-foot residence features solid brick walls, 10 1/2-foot ceilings, 72 large windows, cherry woodwork, stained glass, and a sweeping four-level staircase. The ground floor, once the building’s chapel, has been converted into a gathering space, a private patio, and a garden room.

Upper floors include a two-story library with a fireplace, multiple bedroom suites, terraces, a kitchenette, and a top-floor office. Fifty photos of the property are available to view here.
