A deadly house fire and a separate house explosion just a block apart shook Cincinnati’s East Price Hill neighborhood on Sunday.

Two people were killed and 10 were injured in the house fire on Summit Avenue. After searching for missing individuals, firefighters were forced to evacuate the house and battle the flames for two hours from the exterior.

In an update on Monday, Assistant Cincinnati Fire Chief Matt Flagler said the fire likely started outside and spread to the house.

Hours later, a house exploded on nearby Eberon Avenue, hospitalizing four people. Flagler confirmed Monday that the explosion was accidental.

To curb the spread of box tree moths, the Ohio Department of Agriculture has expanded a quarantine zone to include several counties in Southwest Ohio.

The movement of boxwood shrubs is now restricted in Miami, Montgomery, Greene, Butler, Clermont, Hamilton, and Warren counties.

Box tree moths, an invasive species native to East Asia, feed on the leaves of boxwood shrubs, causing significant damage to this popular landscaping plant.

Evidence of this pest includes chewed or missing leaves, white webbing, and green-black excrement on or around the plant.
